Shirakawa-Go is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a beloved tourist destination. On weekends and national holidays, it can take over 2 hours to get a parking space. Those looking to take their time to enjoy the beautiful Gassho-style village should visit in the mornings on weekdays. This website offers hints for planning a comfortable trip while avoiding congestion, such as limited parking and understanding the peak times.
Those of us living in Shirakawa-Go value the balance between nature, living, and tourism. The moment you step foot into the village, you become a part of it, and a responsible traveler. There are rules of etiquette we expect travelers visiting Shirakawa-Go to uphold in order to maintain our beautiful village for the future. Please read through them.
There are no trains to Shirakawa-Go, so you need to travel by bus. Highway buses go to Shirakawa-Go from Takayama, Kanazawa, Toyama, and Nagoya. We recommend booking tickets in advance when traveling by bus. You can buy tickets on the day if there is space available, but you may have to wait a long time during the peak seasons. Also, since the roads can get congested with traffic, please be prepared to have a flexible schedule.

World Heritage Site "Ogimachi Village" is not a theme park but an area where residents live.
Parking fees for the village-operated car park are charged in place of an admission fee to support the conservation of the village.

Days marked "Very Busy" are days when you will likely have to wait more than two hours just to get to the parking entrance.
